INTRODUCTION
1. Course goal:
The aim of the course is to provide students with knowledge and skills that create the organizational and legal basis required for the implementation of professional research, its presentation to the scientific community, protection and commercialization of intellectual property rights. The course is designed to build the necessary skills to conduct and present linguistic research, to properly use methods of science.
2. Course prerequisites:
Students are required to know English at the level of B2 on the CEFR scale. In addition, students are supposed:
1. To know the main stages of the research process.
2. To be able to collect and process information.
3. To possess elementary skills for conducting research.
3. Course description:
The subject of the course is a modern methodology of science, a set of methodological tools of science, methods of research in linguistics as well as intellectual property law and commercialization of intellectual property. The discipline consists of three modules. The module "Methodology of Scientific Research" forms an understanding of science as research, reveals the meaning of the concepts "methodology", "research methods" and introduces specific scientific, general scientific and philosophical levels of methodology. The module "Fundamentals of Intellectual Property" reveals the role of intellectual property as intellectual capital in the socio-economic development of society and its place in the humanities, introduces the basic forms and mechanisms of commercialization of intellectual property. The module “Research methods in linguistics” gives an overview of the main research methods applied in linguistic analysis and addresses methodological aspects of writing a master’s thesis.
4. Course objectives:
∙ to introduce students to modern methodological concepts, the basics of the methodology of scientific knowledge and methods of scientific research;
∙ to form a holistic view of the research process;
∙ to ensure the development of skills in the formation and use of a conscious methodological position of scientific research;
∙ to improve the ability to search, select and process scientific information, accurate formulation of the purpose, objectives and conclusions of the study;
∙ to provide knowledge about objects and subjects of intellectual property, to introduce students to the norms of the legislation in this sphere, basis of protection of the rights of intellectual property;
∙ to make students familiar with the problems of commercialization of research results, to ensure mastery of methods of accounting and evaluation of intellectual performance.
The course ensures the acquisition of the following competences by students:

− ability to solve complex problems and problems in the field of linguistics and literary studies in the process of professional activity or training, which involves research and/or innovation and is characterized by uncertainty of conditions and requirements;

SC 4. Ability to perform scientific analysis and structuring of linguistic and literary materials, following classical and modern methodological principles.
SC 5. Awareness of the methodological, organizational and legal basis, necessary for research and/or innovation in philology, presentation of research results to the professional community, and protection of intellectual property.
SC 9. Ability to participate effectively and competently in various forms of scientific communication (conferences, round tables, discussions, scientific publications) in the field of English philology.

summative assessment:
The credit is given based on the student’s work throughout the semester LO 1.1–1.3, LO 2.1–2.3, LO 3.1, LO 4.1, which does not presuppose any additional assessment for successful students. The students who have earned less than 60 points are required to do tests and complete a range of tasks on the suggested topics.
Assessment criteria:
Continuous assessment is marked in accordance with the criteria below which refer to students’ preparation for seminars/tests and contribution to discussion.
Participation in seminars:
8-7 points – The student has a high level of knowledge and understanding of core material; does the required readings or research, shows an excellent understanding of issues, shows a sophisticated analysis and gives clear, well-structured answers.
6 points – The student has a good level of knowledge and understanding of core material; does the required readings or research, shows a good understanding of issues and ability to answer questions.
5-3 points – The student has basic knowledge and understanding of core material; partially does the required readings or research, shows a basic understanding of issues pertaining to the course
2-1 points – The student shows limited foundational knowledge pertaining to the topic; does not do the required readings or research.
Contribution to class discussions:
2-1 points – The student consistently contributes to class discussions.
0,5 points – contributes to discussion with occasional inaccuracies.
Module test:
14 points – The students gives the correct answers to all questions
13-7 points – The students gives the correct answers to 9-5 questions (more than 50 %)
6-1 points – The student gives the correct answers to 6-1 questions (less than 50 %; the result doesn’t indicate the mastery of the course material)
7.2. Organization of assessment
Assessment of theoretical knowledge and abilities is continuous in accordance with the thematic plan of classes. Module tests that include multiple choice questions, open-ended questions and practical tasks are conducted at the end of each module:
